The sound continues to exist
Wind as an agent: invisible yet sonically profound. > At the threshold of an air-raid shelter, one perceives the wind's transit through the passages. In the bamboo forest, friction from above meets the "wind-cut" whistling produced as air enters the bamboo cylinders.
Engaging with these soundscapes creates an intimate bond between the body, time, and space. The heritage sites of Jianguo Village No. 1 offer diverse acoustic characteristics where natural "reverberation" (reverb) remains. To listen to these echoes is to experience the process of sound from manifestation to decay.
The installation employs wind sensors to trigger an algorithmic soundscape—merging human-made wind mimicry with field recordings of the environment. Within the shelter, visitor-generated footstep vibrations interlace with archived rhythmic recordings through a complex layering of reverberation. The spatial constraints of the shelter minimize the "liminal gap" between the physical body and the architecture. Fragments of chanting and text-reading are then "collaged" throughout the space.
If sound is like light—evanescent and fleeting—then recording becomes a vessel for permanence. Through the act of listening to these lingering echoes, sound is granted a continued existence.
