The Soundscape Score
The Soundscape Score explores the conditions under which collective memory is formed, and how the “future” may be transformed in an increasingly super-aged society. The work takes the form of a sound corridor in which the entrance also serves as the exit. Within this multichannel environment, the sounds produced by visitors are captured by microphones, while loudspeakers play back the sounds left behind by those who passed through the space before them.
Transforming listening into a bodily experience, the work invites visitors to encounter the traces of individual presence as they move through the corridor. Breathing, footsteps, and bodily movements gradually become amplified, rendering audible the subtle imprints of human presence. As these sounds accumulate, overlap, and dissolve across different bodies, they form an ever-changing soundscape.
Against the backdrop of a declining population and the gradual thinning of the social environments that sustain collective memory, can new ways of remembering still emerge in the future?
