Eco sound

Sound Installation/Music

 Taipei, Taiwan

Xining North Road used to be a major river channel where sampans traveled to and from the docks. Now, the waterway has become a road, and rowing has been replaced by walking. As humans are central to the urban landscape, we must rely on imagination to reconstruct the sounds of a century ago.

Factors like weather, position, and height during recording affect the sonic state and reflect the city’s evolving form. These sounds, which can never be perfectly captured, highlight the urgency of auditory preservation. The "Tian-jing" (courtyard) acts as both a rain collector and a functional "empty space" in traditional buildings.

This multi-channel installation allows participants to feel as if they are listening from within a river. Sounds of street life, vendors, and temple celebrations from above are softened and blurred by the water's presence. Just like the flow of time, these details are submerged, representing the shifting and vanishing sounds of different eras.
