Being or not being

During the pandemic, the daily sounds of Shuanglian Market transformed, offering us a fresh way to listen.

With vendors suspended, the market's auditory landscape changed. Without the usual crowds, the space was filled with empty stalls and closed shutters. As the noise of commerce subsided, the silence of the narrow alleys allowed hidden sounds to emerge: the hum of AC units, the rhythmic pulse of water pumps, the trickle of drainage, and distant birds.

These sounds evoked the imagery of nature. The motor's drone became the gap between stones in a river; the water flow turned into ripples; the vents felt like wind in the trees. These subtle sounds, once drowned out by the city, were rediscovered through the stillness of the pandemic.
